Non-tranditional parenting | LGBT fertility

Non-tranditional parenting or LGBT fertility options are available for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transexual as well as non-gay patients desiring single parenting.  Dr. Pabon and the staff of Fertility Center and Applied Genetics of Florida will try their best to make you feel welcomed.  Over the years we have helped many non-traditional patients start their families.    We believe that non-traditional parents can provide a stable, nurturing, and loving home for a child.   Non-traditional parenting is challenging from a social point of view.  For that reason, it is important that the future parent or parents have a stable relationship as well as the support of their friends and family.

Single or Gay Men

Single or Gay men require an egg donor and a gestational carrier.  Our offices will guide you in the steps to prepare for treatment.  We maintain an anonymous egg donor program within our offices in order to make the egg donor selection process easier and less expensive than with standard agencies.  Once the egg donor is selected, The planned genetic father or fathers are screened for infectious diseases through standard FDA protocols.

The semen sample is obtained and frozen for the future fertilization procedures.  In our offices, all gestational carrier arrangements require that we use screened and frozen sperm as well as insemination with single sperm (ICSI).  The ICSI procedure decreases the risk of transmission of an infection to the gestational carrier.  The anonymous egg donor will also be screened according to FDA guidelines.

IVF with an egg donor and a gestational carrier is currently more commonly done in two steps.  The first step is the fertilization and creation of the embryos as well as the embryo biopsies and freezing of all normal looking day 5 and 6 embryos.  This allows us to determine which embryos have the normal number of chromosomes (23 pairs).

Once we receive results of the individual embryo chromosome tests, only embryos with 23 pairs of chromosomes will be implantable.  This technology allows us to implant single embryos and maintain very high pregnancy rates.  With this process, the great majority of our treatments result in uncomplicated single baby pregnancies.  Twin and higher order pregnancies can be avoided.  It is important to try to avoid a multiple pregnancy due to the high risk of pre-term birth, surgical delivery, cerebral palsy (4-6 times higher risk), and severe cardiac anomalies in multiple pregnancies (4-6 times higher risk).

Once we receive results of the pre-implantation genetic screening of the tested embryos, a frozen/thawed embryo transfer is carried out into the contracted gestational carrier.  The search for a suitable gestational carrier may take longer than finding the egg donor.  Our offices will help in this process as patients wishing to become a gestational carrier often contact us.  Matching through our offices may be more economical than using an agency.

Florida law is very suitable for this process.  There are many experienced attorneys that can answer your legal questions.  We are happy to provide a list.

Lesbian Couples

Lesbian couples have the option of choosing to do simple donor sperm intrauterine inseminations or may choose to be more creative in their efforts to start a family.  We have helped Lesbian couples to carry each other’s embryo at different times or even simultaneously through the use of IVF technologies.

Straight Single Men or Single Women

Straight single men or single women are frequently treated according to their needs.  A single man would require and egg donor and a gestational carrier as described above while a single woman may be a candidate for simple donor sperm intrauterine inseminations.  Some single women may require an egg donor or even a gestational carrier due to maternal age concerns.

Bisexual or Transexual Patients

Bisexual or Transexual patients will be treated according to their individual needs.  The treatment will be dependant on whether a partner can provide sperm or eggs for the IVF and whether a partner is able or willing to carry the pregnancy or require a gestational carrier.
