At Fertility Center & Applied Genetics, we believe in transparency and helping our patients understand exactly what to expect during their ICSI journey. Our patients’ experiences and success stories inspire us daily and help future patients prepare for their own fertility journey.
“Every ICSI journey is unique, but understanding the road ahead can help you feel more confident and prepared. Let me walk you through what you can expect…” – Julio E. Pabon, M.D., F.A.C.O.G.
Your journey begins with a comprehensive consultation where we review your medical history and previous fertility treatments. We perform necessary testing, including:
– Detailed semen analysis
– Sperm DNA fragmentation testing when indicated
– Female partner fertility assessment
– Genetic screening if recommended
Once ICSI is determined as your best treatment option, our team will:
– Create your personalized treatment calendar
– Provide detailed medication instructions
– Schedule monitoring appointments
– Arrange financial counseling and insurance verification
– Offer emotional support resources
The stories in this chapter are not real patients’ stories because we may not share their real names and their medical details. However these stories reflect actual and typical ICSI experiences, including those in our patients.
When S. and T. from Tampa first visited our clinic, they had already experienced the emotional toll of three failed IUI cycles. “Each negative test felt like a step backward,” S. recalls. During their consultation, we identified that Tom’s sperm morphology issues were likely preventing successful conception. We recommended ICSI as their next step.
“I remember feeling nervous about the more intensive nature of ICSI, but Dr. Pabon and his team took the time to explain every detail,” says T.M. “They even showed us videos of the procedure and introduced us to the embryology team who would be handling our case.”
Their ICSI cycle proceeded smoothly, with S. responding well to the stimulation medications. On retrieval day, they were able to collect 12 eggs, of which 9 were mature. The embryology team performed ICSI on all mature eggs, achieving fertilization in 8 of them. “Getting that phone call about our fertilization results was one of the most exciting moments of our journey,” S. remembers.
Today, S. and T.M. are parents to healthy twins, a boy and a girl. “Looking back, what seemed like such a complex and daunting procedure was made manageable by the incredible support we received. The embryology team’s expertise truly made all the difference.”
M. and J. from Sarasota faced what seemed like an insurmountable challenge when they were diagnosed with severe male factor infertility. “The initial diagnosis felt like a blow to my self-esteem,” M. shares openly. “But Dr. Pabon helped us understand that this was a medical condition like any other, with clear treatment options.”
Their journey began with comprehensive testing, including DNA fragmentation analysis, which helped determine that ICSI was their best path forward. Jennifer remembers the day of their first ICSI procedure vividly: “The team made us feel so comfortable. They explained each step as it happened, and we even got to see images of our embryos developing.”
Their persistence paid off. After their first ICSI cycle, J. became pregnant, and their daughter Emma was born. “Every time Emma smiles, we’re reminded of the amazing science and dedicated team that helped bring her into our lives,” says J.
L. and A.J. from Naples came to us with a unique set of circumstances. As a same-sex couple, they knew they would need donor sperm, but they wanted to maximize their chances of success with their limited donor sperm samples.
“We chose ICSI because we learned it could give us the best possible chance with each precious sperm sample,” L. explains. Their journey involved careful coordination with the sperm bank and our laboratory team to ensure optimal timing.
A.J. adds, “What impressed us most was how the clinic treated us like any other couple trying to build their family. They helped us navigate both the technical aspects of ICSI and the emotional aspects of using a donor.”
After a successful ICSI cycle, L. and A.J. are now expecting their first child. “The support we received went beyond the medical procedures. The team helped us feel confident and hopeful throughout the entire process.”
Our patients often ask:
Q: How long does the entire ICSI cycle take?
A: A typical ICSI cycle takes about 4-6 weeks from start to finish, including preparation, stimulation, and the procedure itself.
Q: Will I need to take time off work?
A: Most patients only need one day off for the egg retrieval procedure. Monitoring appointments can usually be scheduled early in the morning.
Q: What’s the recovery time after egg retrieval?
A: Most patients resume normal activities the next day, though we recommend avoiding strenuous exercise for a week.
Q: How soon will we know if ICSI was successful?
A: You’ll receive a fertilization report the day after the procedure, but pregnancy testing occurs about 10-14 days after embryo transfer.
