Micro-Surgical Sperm Aspiration

What is MESA?

MESA is a Micro-surgical Sperm Aspiration.

When Microsurgical Epididymal Sperm Aspiration (MESA) performed?

Microsurgical epididymal sperm aspiration (MESA) is typically performed in men with vasal or epididymal obstructions. During the procedure an incision is made in the scrotal skin and the testis and epididymis are exposed. Using an operating microscope, the epididymal tubules will be opened and sperm will be extracted.

What is TESA?

TESA is Testicular Epididymal Sperm Aspiration.

How is TESA procedure performed?

The physician inserts a small needle about 1/2 inch into the testicle and removes a small sample of tissue. An andrologist separates the sperm from other parts of the tissue by teasing the tissue apart in a special medium. The TESA procedure recovers sperm directly from a man’s testes (testicles), bypassing his reproductive tract.

What number of sperm can be collected?

During the TESA procedure, as many 50 to 100 sperm may be collected.

What patients may need a Sperm Harvesting Surgery?

Patients that have had a vasectomy and are not good candidates for a vasectomy reversal or have failed a vasectomy reversal. Some patients may be good candidates for a vasectomy reversal but choose to do a sperm harvesting surgery in order to do in vitro fertilization (IVF) procedures in order to increase the possibility of pregnancy if the spouse is older than 35.

Some patients need a Sperm Harvesting Surgery due to congenital absence of the sperm tubes that carry sperm from the testicle or from obstruction of these tubes as a complication of prostate or inguinal hernia surgeries.

Some patients have a neurological condition that blocks the nerve signals responsible for ejaculation and sometimes patients have had trauma that led to paraplegia and associated ejaculation problems.

Sperm Harvesting Surgery in our Fertility Center

Fertility Center and Applied Genetics and the offices of Dr. Pabon provide sperm harvesting services as part of a team approach with our Reproductive Urologists. We have worked with several Male Reproductive Specialists in Florida, but most commonly we work with Joshua Green, M.D. Dr. Green’s offices in Sarasota County and his ability to do these procedures near our main IVF facility allows for easy scheduling for our team to be present at the surgery and quickly process the semen specimens for cryopreservation.
